THE SPACE
Situated in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Conical Inc occupies the first floor of a turn-of-the-century Victorian building which was adapted pre-WWII as a light industrial space. Considerable attention has been paid to providing an evocative and multi-faceted architectural context for presenting contemporary art. Changes made to the space reflect and respond to the changing needs of the exhibition program.
The space consists of two distinct yet flexible exhibition areas: First, an interpretation of the modernist white cube is presented as a type of intervention creating a semi-autonomous enclosure. Beyond this plaster-board construction, an older part of the building is revealed. With uncovered internal walls and exposed beams, this larger space has not been adapted to the traditional gallery aesthetic.
A hinged wall partially divides these two areas. When rolled back, the wall opens to reveal a single ambitious expanse encompassing both old and new. This configuration is suitable for group or collaborative exhibitions and Conical Inc Projects.
Floorplans and Elevations
Measurements given in the floorplan are as accurate as possible, however they should be used as a guide only. If required, precise measurements should be taken on-site by the artist.
