Information for applicants

Two separate exhibition spaces are available, labelled on the floorplan as “Enclosure” and “Gallery”. A hinged wall dividing the two spaces can also be rolled back to create one expansive space.

Please view the Floorplans and refer to The Space for further information on the exhibition areas. Where possible we recommend applicants visit the gallery during open hours prior to submitting proposals – both to familiarize themselves with the space and to raise any questions with Conical staff.

Proposals from emerging and established artists are welcome however undergraduate students are generally not accepted. Collaborative proposals are welcome but group exhibitions should be applied for under Conical Projects.

Conical does not subscribe to a house style and programs a broad range of contemporary art. Refer to About Us and the Archive for examples of our program history.

Proposals

There is no application form as such but please observe the following preferred layout:

Cover Sheet (1 A4 Page)

Include your name, home & mobile numbers, email address & postal address. For group/collaborative proposals provide all names. Include the nominated space (ie: Gallery, Enclosure). Include the preferred exhibition date.

Proposal (Maximum 2 A4 Pages)

Exhibition Description

A straight-forward description of how you envisage the work in the gallery – a maximum of 150 words should be adequate (for example: “a large scale DVD projection occupying the entire south wall of the enclosure”). If there are any special requirements in terms of installing mention them here. Be as specific as you can at this stage – it doesn’t matter if changes occur later. We aim to encourage continual development of the proposal not arrest it in time by enforcing strict adherence to the original.

Rationale

A brief, succinct outline of ideas you feel will be explored in your proposed exhibition written in language you feel comfortable with. We’re looking for directness, honesty and relevance to the visual material. Again a maximum of 150 words should be adequate.

Practice

Mention the wider context of your practice and how this specific proposal may develop that practice. A maximum of 150 words again.
