2013 PROGRAM: Information for applicants
The 2013 program will consist of up to ten exhibitions, specific projects and related discursive events.
The program is flexible and is responsive to a range of contexts, including ongoing modifications to the gallery spaces. Both the program and the gallery spaces are subject to change at short notice.
Conical’s commitment to site-related practice recognises the need for an extended installation period – up to ten days are offered depending on the requirements of each exhibition or project.
The program is shaped as follows:
Internally-curated and invited exhibitions
Artists and curators are invited to develop and present new site-related work in dialogue with Conical. This method typically forms a significant portion of the program.
Projects
3SQUARE, an annual mentorship project, is a recent example of a Conical initiated project. Currently, projects are by invitation, and are relevant to the program but have different aims and time lines.
Application based exhibitions
Availability is limited and application rounds are competitive. Applicants should take into consideration Conical’s programming focus, as evidenced in the archive and outlined in the home page text. The program emphasises critical and rigorous practice. New, or substantially reconfigured, site-related installation is our interest. This can take the form of any medium and is not limited to work made in-situ. It is important to note that modular and/or reconfigured work is encouraged. Work does not need to be a direct response to gallery architecture but should engage with historical and/or current directions in spatial, temporal and conceptual practice. Site-related, not necessarily site-specific.
Emerging, mid-career and established artists are accepted (both represented and independent). Conical supports many artists at the end of the ‘emerging’ phase, concentrating on realizing solo exhibitions at a critical juncture in an artists’ development. Collaborations are also encouraged. Applications from curators are accepted, although with proposed group exhibitions attention should be given to the site-related emphasis. Applications from under-graduate students are not accepted.
Applicants should refer to the floor plans, and specify which of the two spaces is preferred. All applicants are encouraged to view the gallery prior to submitting. Applicants will be notified within 6 weeks from the closing date.
EXHIBITION FEES
Conical is committed to providing the best possible conditions for realising ambitious new work. These conditions take the form of time, space, dialogue and, where possible, covering the financial cost of each exhibition. Since 2008 Conical has offered a limited number of fully funded exhibitions. These exhibitions have attracted no fee payable by the artist to the gallery. The aim has been to extend this support to cover the entire program. Through small but steady increases to our budget we now feel confident we can meet this aim. Therefore:
Conical is pleased to announce that for 2013 all exhibitions and projects in the program will be fee free.
This decision will be reviewed annually in relation to funding received. Project participants may be paid an artists fee.
2013 applications accepted between 1 May 2012 – 1 June 2012
There will be no further application rounds for 2012.
